Although the Vindicator nozzles are relatively new to the fire service, they are rapidly proving to be a valuable tool. The Vindicator was designed to address the two most important factors in fire suppression with water, application rate and type stream, as well as adding one more element to the equation, reducing the flame temperature by modifying the air.
The Vindicator satisfies the requirements of both a high rate of application and a broken stream for high heat absorption. The Vindicator offers higher flow rates than found with either a spray nozzle or a solid stream nozzle, while doing so at less nozzle pressure, with increased mobility and safety, and with less steam generation. Because it is an aspirated water stream it has the advantage of being able to remove heat from the combustion zone to slow the reactions. This is an advantage not found in either the solid stream or the combination nozzle. The Vindicator, when used in a heavy smoke environment, offers the additional advantage of delivering a mixture of combustion by-products, which absorbs heat and causes the flame temperature to be even lower. It also has the ability to improve visibility by the attachment of carbon particles in the smoke to the aspirated water droplets thus helping to remove them from the air.
The Vindicator has a higher surface-area-to-volume ratio due to the coupling of high application rate (gpm) and its effective aspiration. Therefore, it has better heat-transfer characteristics than solid stream nozzles and, consequently, is more effective in absorbing heat. Because the application rate is coupled with a high surface-area type stream, it makes it unnecessary to break up the stream by deflecting it off hard surfaces such as bulkheads and overheads as you do with a solid spray nozzle. It also is a poor conductor of electricity unlike the solid stream nozzle.
If the nozzle is under-pressurized, the result is less range yet a substantial flow is still provided. If it’s over-pressurized you simply get a higher application rate and more range. It can operate as low as 25psi or as high as 125psi. The increase in nozzle pressure will give you more gpm and more range. When operating it at its recommended standard operating pressure of 50psi, it offers the benefits of improved mobility with less fire fighter fatigue, improved personnel safety, and with less wear on equipment.
Since the Vindicator is supplying an air-aspirated stream it is an excellent choice for flammable liquid fires and foam applications. The water droplets from the Vindicator nozzles are large droplets and are less affected by wind or thermal columns. Thus, it allows more water to be placed on the flame-fuel interface.
